This mid-century architectural style home built in 1959 was renewed and reinvented inside and out. The homeowner’s goal was to bring the interior up to date, not only in aesthetics, but in technology and function, creating a space that reflects who she is and her lifestyle at this stage of her life and moving forward. The project initiated with a focus on interior design renovation and then evolved into a comprehensive renovation which included the addition of a main level powder room and laundry room by appropriating the space required from the garage area.
Working within the same footprint and creating a living space that feels new and different is often a challenge for any designer. Although we did not increase square footage to the house, we did increase functionality of the living space by opening the kitchen and sunroom, creating increased accessibility and better operational use of the sunroom area. The homeowner can use this entire space as one instead of having two smaller, divided areas that hindered her ability to host larger gatherings.
By adding a laundry room to the main level garage area, we allocated more space for the primary bathroom shower by relocating the washer and dryer to an exclusive laundry area. The shower is now larger and includes a bench seat for accessibility.
As for lighting, windows and outdoor views, this project incorporated all new windows, new interior doors and exterior doors. Natural light now floods the entire living space of the kitchen area after removing the original wall separating the kitchen and the sunroom. A large slider unit was installed in the dining room to maximize the natural light entering that space as well. The front door was designed with a large sidelight to brighten the area.
There are many notable visual design elements and materials used for the exterior and interior. Natural materials were selected to inspire a connection between the indoors and outdoors. Modern materials were also selected that give a nod to the architectural style of the home. Combined, the design elements and materials selected constitute the light, airy feel of the interior.
A variety of special areas and living spaces boost the charm and functionality of this home. The exterior of the home was provided much needed attention to complete the homeowner’s overall design goals. Upon opening the interior space and adding large windows to the sunroom, consequently it became clear the backyard required a major upgrade to coincide and complement the interior space. Therefore, the pool was relocated, a custom fence was designed and installed, a fire-pit area was created to take advantage of the lower terrace of the yard, and a large roof extension was added from the dining area to create a covered outdoor kitchen and lounge. The indoor and outdoor living space are now unified. This project takes biophilic design into consideration. The connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces are undeniable.
A lower level hangout was also created for the homeowner’s grandchildren. It includes a living collage wall that is constantly updated with new images of their adventures together. A lounge and gaming area, and a bunkroom with private bathroom provides accommodation for their stays.
Interior designers were involved in creating the floor plans, lighting layouts and selections, wood flooring and stain selection, tile selections and elevations, cabinetry design and material selections, appliance selections, countertop selections, paint and wallcovering selections, furniture layouts, specification and procurement. Assisted in the selection and procurement of artwork, area rugs and accessories.
